Research area

Markus Kreft is a Ph.D. candidate and doctoral researcher at the Bits To Energy Lab at ETH Zurich. His work focuses on incentive structures that enable a high share of renewable energy sources in the power grid of the future, using tools based on optimization and learning algorithms.

As the share of sustainable power generation in the energy grid increases, distributed resources play a more and more important role. While local trading of energy in peer-to-peer markets that have been implemented so far brings advantages for some grid participants, the potential of local coordination for the grid operation itself remains mostly unrealized. Therefore, Markus studies the interplay between pricing models and customer reaction to incentivise both, a fair distribution of power grid costs and a high grid efficiency, with the goal to reduce power peaks.

Markus Kreft holds a Bachelor's and Master's degree in Physics from Heidelberg University, where his research focused on the dynamics of biologically plausible neural networks. He specialized his studies on statistics and data analysis as well as machine learning. Markus has industry experience in project management from an internship in the infrastructure sector.
